The goal of this project was to create a 27”x27” informational poster about an invasive species. The poster had to include a variety of information about the species, images, illustrations, a map, and an event. I chose to do red imported fire ants.

For the design, I wanted the large ant to be the focal point to emphasize how scary they are. I also used the ant as a way to break up the negative space on the composition which helped me to figure out where to place all the information and imagery. 

 

I also used underground ant nests as a way to section off some of the information while adding some contrast to the composition (brown and orange), and to emphasize their invasion method which involves them building nests everywhere.

 

For the ‘Red Invasion’ title, I created custom typography because I wanted it to mimic the ant legs while also following the shape around the ant, and for some of the subtitles I used a typeface that looked similar to the nests.
